The Mediterranean islands
A lot of Americans skip the Mediterranean because it's not as easy to access from the States as the Caribbean.
On top of that, the Mediterranean gets its best weather from late spring through early fall, when Yankees aren’t usually thinking of beachy escapes. But if you do go, you’ll find that the Mediterranean islands are as awe-inspiring for their culture and food as they are for their beaches and weather. There’s also plenty of outdoor excitement to be had, with the right guidance. Here are some adventures that I’d recommend in the Mediterranean islands |
Steeped in Homeric history and culture, scented by wild fennel and basil, Crete welcomes and overwhelms visitors with its wealth of myths, legends and history, a blessed and dramatic landscape, an extraordinary fusion of past and present, and an abundance of choices and experiences. The best times to visit Crete are late spring to early summer and autumn, when the tourist infrastructure has geared up but you won't have to contend with the crowds of summer tourists. Crete weather is usually pleasantly warm during this time and swimming is possible. |
Cyprus is warm and sunny most of the year. The sea is aquamarine color and pristine clear. The mountain around Cyprus are senic and loaded with historical interests. The Cyprus quaint mountain villages have ancient history from the Roman times, including castles, temples, Byzantine churches and many other attractions from long ago.
If you are looking for privacy on you Cyprus vacation you won't have dificulty finding a quite and peaceful cove, even during peak season, if look off the normal tourism spots. Cyprus is friendly, and the friendly locals are alway excited to help visitors enjoy their island. Cyprus is known as the "Island of Love," because of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Cyprus It is a very romantic island, and its great restaurants provide fine cuisine and excellent wine. |
The Balearic Islands are situated in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain, and comprise Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, with Menorca being the second largest and most northerly of the islands. Menorca is approximately 250 miles from both Barcelona and Marseilles. As the island is only 48 kilometres long and 19 kilometres wide, most parts of the island can be reached quite easily. The roads from and around Mahon are excellent. There are good bus services, and hire cars are available through Menorca at very reasonable rates. As Menorca is the northern-most of the Balearic Islands, it is usually a few degrees cooler than the other islands, which can be a definite advantage in the summer months. Menorca weather also benefits from cooling breezes off the sea, which are very welcome in the summer . A drive or climb up to the top of Monto Toro (357 metres) offers views over the entire island. In Spring, the island is blessed with beautiful wild flowers. |
Ibiza attracts the movers and shakers, the movie stars and celebrities, the rich and famous and just about anyone who appreciates the wild atmosphere that pervades Ibiza. The nightclubs are glitzy, racy, extremely exciting and rock all night. These incredible hotspots and not for the timid or lighthearted: Here's a few of the more popular clubs:
Es Paradis, Space, DC 10, Amnesia, Privilage and Pach. World famous bands flock to Ibiza fro June to October, and the music venues are easy to find and enjoy, some outside, some on the beaches, some spontaneous. |
